The 8 Forms of Dementia

Dementia is a form of Alzheimer’s but not always attributed to the disease itself. There are multiple reasons that someone could experience symptoms of dementia including various diseases and conditions that result in damaged brain cells. Dementia is a disease that typically happens slowly with a consistent rate of deterioration. The earliest signs are usually memory problems, confusion, change in communication or behavioral patters and the inability to tell the difference between truth and lies as well as sarcasm. The causes of dementia can range from high fever, drug abuse, dehydration, vitamin deficiencies, poor diet, Lyme disease and many others.

According to the Alzheimer’s Reading Room there are eight common types of dementia including:

Alzheimer’s – this is the most common type of dementia and attributes to between 60-80% of dementia cases.

Vascular Dementia – this is the second most common type of dementia and is caused by a lack of blood flow to the brain often due to strokes or blocked arteries.

Dementia with Lewy Bodies – pattern of decline is similar to Alzheimer’s and is caused by abnormal deposits of the protein alphasynuclein.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus – this form of dementia is caused by the excess buildup of fluid in the brain and can sometimes be corrected by insertion of a shunt in the brain.

Mild cognitive impairment – this is a condition where the individual has impairment in cognitive functioning but not enough to be noticeable to others. This at times leads to dementia and others the individual can revert to normal cognitive status.

Frontotemporal Dementia – This is when there is damage to brain cells especially in the frontal lobe and side regions of the brain.

Mixed dementia – is exactly what it sounds like, a mixture of different forms of dementia.

Parkinson’s disease – Many people who have Parkinson’s disease develop dementia in the later stages of the disease.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease – Rapidly fatal disorder that impairs memory and coordination and causes behavior changes. Caused by the misfolding of prion protein throughout the brain.

Why Yoga is Important in Assisted Living

Windsor Luxury Assisted Living believes in utilizing naturalistic and homeopathic remedies for helping cure and heal the body. Twice a week Cindy Holliday from TruFit Studios in Fountain Hills travels to Camelback Manor to provide stretch and yoga classes to our residents. Recently we asked Cindy to describe the benefits of yoga for seniors and here is what she had to say!

What are some of the benefits of exercise for the Seniors community? Who should take these classes? Well, the easy answer is: anyone who wants to feel better. To be more specific, anyone that wants to improve their balance, coordination, and stamina, anyone who has problems with joint stiffness and/or pain. Studies show that the benefits are proven in people who suffer from fibromyalgia and arthritis. Anyone that wants to improve their range of motion and flexibility, would like to reduce stress and lower blood pressure, and would like to elevate their mood and socialization.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults incorporate moderate to vigorous physical activity into their daily lives for significant health benefits. Exercises can be performed while seated and/or standing. A chair is always available for support. Breathing exercises are always practiced to promote relaxation and mental clarity, to nourish and regenerate cells, and to increase strength of the abdominal muscles and diaphragm. Other benefits include increased range of motion of the joints in the ribcage and spine, and lowering blood pressure.

All of these benefits can be accomplished with Yoga, Tai Chi, and aerobic classes using weights. I have taught exercise to the Senior community since 2006. The majority of the participants have been with me since the beginning. You can hear their testimonies, and I have seen for myself the significant improvements in my students’ balance, strength, coordination, and range of motion. Many of my students have told me that they are taking less blood pressure medication and their overall health has improved! Most of their doctors tell them to keep doing whatever it is that they are doing! They are excited and committed to coming to class regularly and sharing stories of their positive doctor visits and improved health with others. I work with several  age groups of people and can tell you that the Senior population is the most dedicate group on the whole. They take their health and wellness very seriously. I am honored and love being a part of this!

NOTE: the above benefits are a summary of research completed by: Berger & Owen. 1992; Allolio, and Schonecke, 1994; Telles, 2000; Schmidt, 1997, and the Silver Sneaker Fitness Program.

Is Divorce an Option for Alzheimer’s?

As I was researching information to write about in reference to luxury assisted living, I came upon an article about a young woman who suffered sadly from a brain tumor that was inoperable. This tumor started to take over her personality, made her aggressive, angry and caused her physical health to decline visually and fast. If you have seen the movie Green Mile, the Warden’s Wife’s behavior mimics that of which I read. I was taken back by this article as my heart hurt for the husband and children.

The husband cared for her the best he could for as long as possible, however her declining mental status was wearing thin on the children. They loved their Mother, of course, but seeing the woman who brought them into this world, change in such a way was too difficult for them, so the husband choose to put her in an assisted living facility.

Another article I read questioned whether or not it is humane to divorce a spouse suffering from a disease such as Alzheimer’s. At first I was shocked at the responses, that people would put their loved one in a home and divorce them for something that they can not control. Then I started to think logically rather than emotionally, and I realized that I would hope my spouse would do the same.

If I were to be diagnosed with a mind altering disease, one that I knew at diagnosis that I would become a burden to my family, I would want them to provide assisted living care for me and I would hope they continue to visit, however as I declined, I would not want my children to see me like that as their last images of me on a daily basis. Instead I would hope my husband would bring them to see me on my good days, so their last memories of me are good ones.

Of course no one can truly say what they would want until they are put in those shoes. I however feel that the article was accurate and that I would prefer my husband divorce me so that he can move on with his life and enjoy the remainder of his days. I am very interested in learning what the public feels about this topic so please respond.Camelback Manor

Luxury Assisted Living is About Quality of Life

Finding an affordable assisted living facility is not a difficult task. There is an entire market focused around searching for the right facility to live or to place your loved one. There are websites that will give you options and brokers you can contact. The problem with this is that it is not very personal and finding a place to live for the remainder of your years where you can depend on caregivers for help.

Windsor Luxury Assisted Living is a Not-For-Profit luxury assisted living facility located at the base of Camelback Mountain in the heart of Paradise Valley, Arizona and we differ from other assisted living facilities, not only in appearance as our residents reside in a 11,400 sq. ft. gorgeous Manor, but in our care giving as well.

Although we specialize in memory care needs, our pride is in the resort style care that our dedicated care givers provide.  We have a three to five care giver to resident ratio which is unheard of in the assisted living market. We provide three full meals that are all hand prepared, made fresh with only the finest meats and vegetables. Our residents are enticed to help out around the house should they choose, so that they feel as though this is their home and they give back to the whole.

At our luxury assisted living facility, we provide full medication monitoring and we have an RN on staff 24 hours a day 7 days a week, who, along with the care givers, pay close attention to the medical needs of our residents. Windsor Luxury Assisted Living also has three Medical Doctors who come to the home so we do not have to travel if one of our residents requires a doctor’s care. One of our primary doctors is not only a MD, but she specializes in homeopathic remedies for those who prefer to avoid medication.

Each and every day one of our management team, or Walter Kabat, General Manager, sits with our residents and dines with them for every meal. We enjoy the opportunity to get to know our residents, their lives, their families, their wants, needs and desires. With having such an intimate atmosphere, being licensed for ten residents, we have the ability to provide quality care, not only health related, but companionship as well!

At Windsor Luxury Assisted Living we believe that 15 minutes of care and companionship at a time is just not acceptable. All of our doctors, caregivers and staff take extra time with each individual, (again this is possible due to the limited amount of residents we provide care for in each home), because we believe you can not learn the important parts of an individuals needs with a short 15 minute conversation. We want all of our residents to know that they are top priority and their care is the most important part of our jobs.

If you are looking for a home that mimics your quality of life, provides proper nutrition, and the companionship of a family then come tour our luxury assisted living facility. Take the time to meet our staff, our residents and view our surroundings and then go and tour two or three other facilities. We are confident that you will see we offer a quality of life that no one can compare to. Call now for more information at 480-550-8727, or visit our Contact Us page and we will call you!

Windsor Luxury Assisted Living – Story from Erica

My name is Erica, and one of the reasons that I became involved in Windsor Luxury Assisted Living is because I had a long history in care giving of one sort or another so I felt I was prepared for the experience. When I came across the opportunity to work with this organization, my eyes were opened to the needs of the elderly; I started to pay close attention to the diseases and troubles that plague our seniors. I felt a drive to make a difference and Dr. Walter Kabat allowed me the opportunity to do something different for the luxury assisted living market.

A few days after starting with Camelback Manor, the luxury assisted living facility in Paradise Valley; I was driving somewhere and as I was exiting the freeway I noticed a police car pulled over on the side of the exit ramp. The officer was speaking with an elderly man, dressed in his pajamas. I then noticed that there was not a second car that the officer had pulled over. It took me a few miles to realize that individual was probably a lost elderly man who is suffering from dementia and wandered off.

I have heard stories like this on the news, but for some reason this realization hit me harder than before and all I wanted to do was turn around and take him back to the Arizona assisted living facility I worked for because I knew that Dr. Kabat would have taken him under his wing and helped him find his loved ones. I spent the next few days wondering what would have happened if I had turned around. I wondered if that man even has loved ones, or if he is left alone in an assisted living facility where residents are given a twin bed, a night stand, and have to share a small television with the individual on the other side of the curtain.

I thought about my Grandfathers, and the time one was in an assisted living facility in Arizona, and I was almost brought to tears at the standards of living he was subjected to, and the degrading lifestyle he had to maintain for an extended period of time. I was confused as to how a man with honor and dignity was supposed to heal when he was put in a situation that only caused him to be uncomfortable and anxious. I knew that stress can cause major health issues and wasn’t the purpose of this place to help him heal so he could return to his life the way he was used to? I thought about my other Grandfather, who is starting to suffer from the side effects of growing old. I remembered the time my Aunt informed me he was not eating because he had no interest in cooking dinner thus he was becoming very ill due to being malnutritioned.

I thought about my Mother and Father, and I made the decision at that point that I would never allow my loved ones to have anything less than the quality services luxury assisted living with Windsor Luxury Assisted Living provides. I decided to join the team and do whatever I can to make the organization successful so I know there will always be a place where I can give them the type of care they deserve.

I know that I will feel guilt and shame when and if it comes time to place one of my loved ones in an assisted living facility. I am the type of individual who feels responsible to take care of those who I love and provide for, however I know that I would never have the patience and mental capacity to care for my parents or loved ones the way that they deserve at that point. I see the way the caregivers at Windsor Luxury Assisted Living work with the residents, and I observe their reassuring methods to redirect when needed, and I know that my loved ones would be in better hands being provided for by the professionals working at Camelback Manor.

If you are struggling with deciding to place your loved one in an assisted living facility, please call us so we can help you through making whatever decision is in the best interest of your loved one. We understand where you are coming from so we want to make sure to be available for you during this difficult time. We can refer you to a professional healthcare advocate who can help with finding the right house if we are not the perfect fit, as well as help with all the paperwork, etc. that comes along with finding healthcare services. We also have counselors who would be happy to talk to you if need be in order to guide you through whatever feelings you are experiencing.

Windsor Luxury Assisted Living is holding our annual Holiday part at Camelback Manor this weekend. This is the time of year we enjoy the most as we can decorate the beautiful Manor and eat home made truffles in the luxurious kitchen that anyone would love to prepare meals in! The hustle and bustle of the holiday season does not run short as we enjoy playing holiday themed games, and especially throwing holiday events!

Happy Holidays from Windsor Luxury Assisted Living

Dr. Walter Kabat, and the staff at Windsor Luxury Assisted Living are working hard to put together a holiday event on Saturday We have invited the friends, family and loved ones of our residents, along with the supporters of Windsor Luxury Assisted Living, to celebrate the holidays with candies, cookies and coco. Of course we always have our signature espresso and hand made treats, or maybe a nice glass of wine.

Expect the little ones to be eating popcorn and watching Christmas movies in our comfortable theater while others are playing games, drawing pictures or putting together puzzles. Kellee has activities planned that will keep the little ones entertained, and there will always be enough for the young at heart to join in as well.

Santa will be making a guest appearance, along with music, dancing and stockings hung from the chimney with care. We take luxury assisted living seriously however, we know that the holidays are about family and loved ones celebrating their time together so we do everything we can in order to make sure being under different roofs does not take away from the feeling of being “home” for the holidays.

From all the staff at Windsor Luxury Assisted Living, we hope you have a beautiful holiday season and a safe and happy New Years! Contact us for more information about the holiday party, or the educational event we will be holding in January.
